CONGRATULATIONS to The Decievers for taking out BOB'08!
This year more than 40 bands are expected to descend on the Foundry and UCSA Ballroom in an all out battle to determine the true Canterbury champion of rock (massive bragging rights). Held during the New Zealand Music Month, the Battle of Bands kicked off in 2005 to celebrate NZ music, and has been growing in popularity since. The stage is set for the competition this year to be bigger than ever, with supercharged BOB 08 prizes, some big-name campus bands, some hot naked chicks and *Foundry drink and food specials* set to create an event of epic proportion. This is in-line with the UCSA vision of taking the event national in several years.
BOB contestants will be firstly judged during the HEATS which will separate the ROCK GODS from Hansen/Creed inspired degenerates. Contestants will be given ten minutes or two songs (whichever comes first) to prove their worth, being judged from a select panel of musicians on the Christchurch music scene. Those successful will progress to the semi-final in a 15 minute/three song rock off more worthwhile than a Smashing Pumpkins excuse for a concert. You will probably know more of these songs than an entire two-hour sweaty Billy Corgan performance.
Finalists will compete in the UCSA Ballroom on Friday the 16th of May, playing twenty minutes/four songs, with a mandatory NZ cover song.
Last year the event was taken out by Fingerprint who earned paid gigs at the end of lectures Tea Party, the Dux de Lux and Otago re-orientation. The Deceivers and Dangerbatt deserve honourable mention.
This year the competition is styled with a kick-ass, no holds barred ‘winner takes most’ attitude, where second place is the runner-up and third place is the first loser (with all due respect).
The winner this year is entitled to a hefty $1000 of cash, $1000 music vouchers, and paid gigs at the Southern Amp festival…..
The runner up will receive a $50 bar voucher, lollipops and bumper stickers. And recording time for their band.
Bands are required to submit their entry form and bio online (UCSA website) by Tuesday the 22nd of April at the latest in order to feature in the CANTA. Late entries for the event will be taken up until Wednesday the 30th of April.
Good luck. I expect that after three weeks of holiday practice your band will be super-tight and ready to compete in an epic BOB08.
ROCK ON
