Childcare is provided by the University of Canterbury Students' Association to allow students with children to attend lectures, tutorials, employment etc. The staff create a warm, friendly atmosphere where children feel secure and comfortable in their surroundings. The Centre’s programme is based on the aims and goals of Te Whariki, the Early Childhood Curriculum where each child receives individual attention and experiences that enhance positive developmental stages.
Infants
For infants we ensure individualised programmes that adjust to the infant's own rhythms, plus a strong partnership between staff and parents.
Toddlers
For toddlers we provide a secure environment and a programme that provides both challenges and predictable happenings that encourage a toddler’s cognitive skills and language development.
Young Children
For the 3-5 year olds we provide an environment with resources, challenges and support for children’s widening interests and problem-solving capacities. We encourage sustained conversations, queries and complex thinking including concepts of fairness, difference and similarity.
The Centre is divided into two areas, one for children from 3 - 5 years of age, with three trained Early Childhood Teachers and a staff/child ratio of 1:8. The second playroom caters for children from 1 - 3, and there is a nursery attached for children under 1. In this area the staff/child ratio is 1:4, and in the nursery room, 1:3. There are nine staff members working in this area.
Bookings
We are unique with our booking system, where we offer one-hour bookings, or full day bookings, depending on students’ lectures, tutorials and study. WINZ childcare subsidies are available once your child’s booking is for three hours or more.
