The annual University Blues Awards were held in style last Thursday night
(18 September) in the beautifully decorated UCSA Shelley Common Room.
Talented University of Canterbury students from all sporting disciplines,
from Rowing to Aussie Rules to Futsal, arrived to receive recognition of
their amazing achievements.

The night kicked off with a welcome from Master of Ceremonies TV 3 sports reporter Dave di Somma and continued on with a delicious three-course meal.  One of the highlights of the evening was guest speaker Lorraine Moller - 4-time NZ Woman's Marathon Olympian and bronze medallist in Barcelona 1992.  Her words of encouragement and stories of determination were inspiring and proved that 'following your bliss' can lead to life-changing achievements.  The evening concluded with the announcements of the two big awards.  The Outstanding Contribution to UC Sport award went to Mark Mates for his services to University Rugby.

The winner of the UC portsperson of the Year was Kieran Read.  Kieran's rugby talents saw him debut for Canterbury in 2006, join the Super 14 team in 2007, and become captain of the Canterbury NPC team in 2008.  He is current in his fourth year of study towards a Bachelor of Sport Coaching.  Congratulations Kieran!
