//. SUPERVISOR OF THE YEAR

Supervisors play a really vital role in the postgraduate experience, and can make a huge difference to their students. In 2006, the UCSA decided to hold it's first 'Supervisor of the Year' competition to acknowledge the supervisors who really go the extra mile for their students.

We ran a selection round, where students could nominate their supervisors for this award. We then looked at all the nominations and weighed them up based on a number of criteria to find our supervisor of the year, and runner-up.

Supervisor of the Year 2006: Dave Kelly (Biological Sciences)

Runner-Up Supervisor of the Year 2006: Jen Hay (Linguistics)

Some of the things people liked about their nominated supervisors:
'Supportive', 'positive', 'encouraging', 'in constant contact', 'going beyond the call of duty', 'showing concern for student well-being', 'treating students with respect and collegiality', 'making students feel their work is important', 'challenging students to look deeper', 'always having an open door and a willing ear'; encouraging students to 'go to conferences', 'publish their work', and 'forge connections with others in their research field'; being 'patient', 'great role model', 'respecting students as researchers'.
