College of Education Primary Report
The review panel found that the current Undergraduate programmes comply completely with the NZ regulations but many programmes in Australia, North America, and Europe require 2 years of professional study as part of a 4-year undergraduate programme. Some contentious points in the recommendations are: - “Recommendation 4” - The College implement an integrated 4 year degree programme with pathways to Early Childhood and Primary
- It is important to note that this would mean increased professional practice time, which could improve the overall quality of the degree
- “Recommendation 8” - The College review admission and entry criteria
- This means that entry criteria may exclude people who have the potential to be excellent teachers
- “Recommendation 14” – The Panel view that two years of professional studies are a necessary prerequisite for teaching
- This means that the recommendations go beyond early childhood and primary, the implications are that this would affect those training for secondary school teaching
We want hear your voice and opinion on this matter, the UCSA is holding a Forum on Tuesday 5th August, at the Collective café starting from 12.30pm, and also a reminder that there is BBQ happening at 12pm. Please make sure you get the word round your fellow students.
